چکیده
The hypothetical photonic origin of the most energetic air shower detected by the Fly's Eye experiment is discussed. The method used for the analysis is based on Monte Carlo simulations including the effect of precas-cading of ultra-high energy (UHE) photons in the geomagnetic field. The application of this method to data expected from the Pierre Auger Observatory is discussed. The importance of complementing the southern Auger location by a northern site for UHE photon identification is pointed out.

A study on the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in extensive air showers
The dependence of the lateral distribution of Cherenkov light in simulated extensive air showers to the energy and the mass of the primary cosmic rays has been studied. It has been shown that a previous claim about mass independent proportionality of shower energy to the total Cherenkov photon number is not valid in energies below EEAS ~ 1014 eV. We have found that the core distance of the so c...
متن کاملImpact of Photon Spectra on the Sensitivity of Polymer Gel Dosimetry by X-Ray Computed Tomography
Introduction: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of X-ray spectra on the sensitivity of a polymer gel dosimeter imaged with a conventional computed tomography (CT) scanner. Material and Methods: The whole process of CT imaging of an irradiated polymer gel was simulated by MCNPX Monte Carlo (MC) code. The imaging of polyacrylamide gel was accomplished by means of a co...
متن کاملThe event generator DPMJET-III at cosmic ray energies
A new version of the Monte Carlo event generator DPMJET for air shower simulations is presented. It is a code system based on the Dual Parton Model and combines all features of the DTUNUC-2, DPMJET-II and PHOJET 1.12 event generators. DPMJET-III allows the simulation of hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, photonhadron, photon-photon and photon-nucleus interactions from a few GeV up ...
متن کاملPropagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays
We briefly describe the energy loss processes of ultrahigh energy protons, heavier nuclei and gamma rays in interactions with the universal photon fields of the Universe. We then discuss the modification of the accelerated cosmic ray energy spectrum in propagation by the energy loss processes and the charged cosmic ray scattering in the extragalactic magnetic fields. The energy lost by the ultr...
متن کاملActive Galaxies as Particle Accelerators
We present the theoretical arguments and describe the accumulating experimental evidence that jets, powered by supermassive black holes, are true cosmic accelerators. They produce photons of TeV energy, possible higher, and may be the enigmatic source of the highest energy cosmic rays. The features of the multiwavelength emission spectrum are dictated by the interactions of electrons and proton...
متن کاملUltra High Energy Cosmic Rays and the Auger Observatory
In this proceeding we present the construction status and the performances of the Pierre Auger Observatory together with the first results obtained with our initial 18 month of data. In particular, we discuss our search for anisotropy near the Galactic Center, our limit on the photon fraction at the highest energies and our first estimate of the cosmic ray spectrum above 3 EeV. All of the mater...
